Position Description

Under the general supervision of the Hospital Attending Physician, in collaboration with clinical nursing staff, is responsible for evaluation of, and development of treatment plans for the inpatients. Assists in the care and management of medical patients to include, but not limited to, admission history and physical, ongoing assessment and intervention, coordination or inpatient, and discharge planning. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patient. Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services with Lifespan's mission, vision, values with consideration of the life span, including all development stages as well as cultural patterns.


  • Obtains and records medical histories, performs and records physical examinations, records pertinent progress notes in the medical records, develops treatment and discharge plans, develops follow-up plans, and initiates life-saving measures in emergency situations until aid arrives. Initiates patient status and participates in the development of a patient care management plan with the registered nurses and the attending physician.
  • Provides educational and liaison supports to health care team members.
  • Participates in the education of patients, families, and caregivers regarding any procedures, post-procedural care, and expected outcomes and progress.
  • May perform clinical tasks unique to assigned area which may include recording electrocardiograms and inspecting results for arrhythmias.
  • Initiates Basic Life Support/Advanced Cardiac Life Support, as indicated, and endotracheal intubations.
  • May perform other duties as requested, by the attending physician, including, but not limited to, evaluation of patients in the emergency room, removal of sutures, and performing arterial punctures for arterial blood gas.
  • Inserts peripheral IV lines, nasogastric tubes, and urinary catheters.
  • Participates in the general care of pacemaker patients, caring for wounds, and caring and removal of tubes and drains.
  • Always maintains due regard for compulsive communication between the Nurse Practitioner and the attending physician or his/her delegate.

Other information:

  • Graduate from a Nurse Practitioner program with MS degree.
  • Certified by the American Nurses Association (ANA) or by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) to practice in the expanded role.
  • License must include prescriptive privileges.
  • Completion of a course in American Heart Association Basic Life Support/Advanced Cardiac Life Support.


  • Successful completion of supervised three month clinical internship or equivalent in clinically intensive atmosphere (hospital) preferably in the area of Internal Medicine.
  • Must have patient care services, procedures and privileges approved by the sponsoring physician.
