Permanent MAT Legislation Passes in House
Last Friday, the House passed H.R. 6, the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act, by a vote of 396 to 14. Of particular note, section 303 of the legislation permanently authorizes NPs and PAs to prescribe Medication Assisted Treatments (MATs) to patients battling addiction. Under current law, the authorization for NPs and PAs to prescribe MATs, which was granted in the Comprehensive Addiction Recovery Act of 2016, would expire on October 1, 2021. Section 303 further authorizes CNMs, CNSs and CRNAs to prescribe MATs for a five-year period from October 1, 2018, to October 1, 2023. Read AANP’s press release on the passage of H.R 6. AANP and our APRN colleagues urge the Senate to preserve this provision in any final package passed by the chamber and ultimately sent to the President’s desk.
