Empowering Nurse Practitioners as Leaders in Healthcare

Message from NH Harm Reduction Coalition

Dear Colleagues,

At our last Healthcare Taskforce meeting I mentioned a fundraising campaign Hand Up Health Services has started to address the high demand for our services on the Seacoast. After the state cancelled the RFP for syringe service funding we are currently working to fund expanded services. Our goal of $40K is big but it goes a long way to fund expanded services across the seacoast for the next year.

If you could also consider sharing this info with others that are interested in addressing our opioid epidemic that would help be incredible to support this work.

Hand Up Health Services is a volunteer-staffed syringe service program that works to reduce drug related harms like infections and overdose in the Seacoast of New Hampshire. New Hampshire has the 3rd highest per capita rate of overdose deaths in the country. Syringe service programs work to reduce these unnecessary deaths by reaching out with compassion to people who use drugs to provide them with safer supplies, support, and education on reducing infection and overdose. This connection is critically important to people who use drugs, and those who connect with a syringe service program are 5 times more likely to enter substance use treatment.

We began this program in July 2017 and it continues to grow as we become a trusted community asset. We have already collected and disposed of over 40,000 used syringes and connected more than 50 people with substance use treatment and healthcare services.

Despite the clear evidence and success of syringe service programs, New Hampshire will not be funding programs like ours anytime soon. Our work has been funded through small grants and a few amazing donors so far but as we have become a trusted resource in the community more people are reaching out for our services. We need more funding to expand across the Seacoast.

I would really appreciate if you could take a few minutes to learn about our organization and our fundraising campaign:
