Opioid Update—We Need Your Voices Heard!
It is anticipated that this evening the Senate will vote on its opioid package. As previously reported, the House passed H.R. 6, the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act, which included Section 3003, a key provision that will make permanent the authorization, originally granted in CARA, for NPs and PAs to prescribe medication assisted treatments (MATS) and will authorize certified nurse-midwives, clinical nurse specialists and nurse anesthetists to prescribe MATs for a five-year period. The legislation that the Senate will take up today does not include this section.

After the vote in the Senate, the conference process between the House and Senate will begin, eventually emerging with one final legislative package that will need to pass both chambers before being sent to the President’s desk for signature.

It is paramount that your voices be heard throughout this process. Please use the AANP Advocacy Center to send letters to your Members of Congress, urging them to support a permanent authorization for NPs to prescribe MATs. Continued updates on this important issue will be provided in the weekly Government Affairs Update.
